Selecting and Sorting Scans

HotScans Help Index

HotScansScans offers many predefined scans to choose from. To view all of them click on the Trading Strategies link. You can choose the following Scan Presets to get started.

  • Rallying Now
  • Falling Now
  • Big Volume Now

Rallying Now:   Ranks all stocks that qualify by positive percentage price change over the last 5 minutes.

Falling Now:  Ranks all stocks that qualify by negative percentage price change over the last 5 minutes.

Big Volume Now:   Displays the stocks that have the highest relative volume increase over the last 5 minutes.

Once you have selected a preset scan and you have the results for the last 5 minutes, you can re-define the time period(s) you want to view, or you can select an additional previous period. To choose a different time period as your primary scan period, such as the last 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes or since the open, use the Change Scan's Period drop down menu.

Furthermore, you have the option to choose and view multiple periods at once. To do so, use the drop down menu under Select Previous Period. You can also view a third time period (from the opening) at the same time by clicking the Display Daily Gauges box.

HotScans allows you to enter customized filters. To learn more about these filters please refer to the Basic Filters and Advanced Filters help file. If you change the basic filters and save the settings the preset scans can be re-run time and time again with your customized filters.

The results of a scan are dependent upon the scan you choose and the filters you choose. All results will show the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ composite indexes in addition to the top 25 stocks for that particular scan. The type of scan you choose will determine the sort. For example, if you choose stocks Rallying Now, the results will be sorted by percent Price Change. If you choose Big Volume Now, the results will be sorted by Relative Volume change for the time period you select. When choosing multiple time periods, the resulting stocks will be sorted by the primary time period.

The results table shows the following information: Stock Symbol, Current price, price change since the opening, last (5) minute % price change and gauge, last (5) minute volume vs. average volume and gauge. If you choose to see the Daily Gauges (change since the opening), they will appear as the first two gauge columns.

    Re-Sorting Selected Scans

You can also re-sort your current scan by percent price change up or down, or by relative volume after you have setup all of your other filters. You perform this re-sort by clicking on the desired re-sort link. Changing the sort order with these links will not change any other scan settings.

Selecting one of these links will change the current sort order. Selecting %Chg. will cause the current table to be sorted by decreasing percent price change. This will show stocks with the largest percent price gain at the top of the table. Selecting %Chg. will cause the current table to be sorted by increasing percent price change. Stocks with the greatest percent price decline will be shown at the top of the table. Selecting Rel.Vol. will cause the table to be sorted by relative volume. The stocks showing the greatest change in relative volume will appear at the top of the table.

The titles will change to reflect any change to the selected sort. If you have changed the sort from the default scan setting, the new sort setting will be displayed at the end of the title in braces. The current sort will also be displayed in parenthesis along with the currently selected timeframe.
